My opinions on the book: The Sun is also a Star by Nicola Yoon.
This is my first book review ever! I would love for y'all to tell me what you think in the comments below. The reason I read this book was because I saw the trailer to the movie on Yara Shahidi's Instagram page. I fell in love with it immediately and told myself I gotta read it!
Ratings:
5/5!!!!
I gave this book a 5/5 because it's my first romantic book this year and my first time of reading Nicola Yoon's book. She made me fall in love with her. Her writing style was easy going and neat.
Mood through out the book?
Happy and anxious.
What I thought about the characters?
Let me start with Daniel. I love Daniel! He's the total opposite of what we usually read about guys and that made me appreciate his character so much. Daniel is soft, unrealistically emotional, and really expressive about his feelings. I love him for that because he's just open about his emotions. I live in Nigeria and trust me, if a Nigerian guy reads this he'll probably call him names, because here we have this extreme masculinity which leads to suppressing emotions. I learnt a lot from Daniel(even though he's a fictional character) and I can't wait to see them reproduce this character in the movie(heard it's Melton that's playing the role, djgufjvnfjfigfkgssss!)
Natasha, Natasha. Hmmm
Let me be honest, the author is brilliant! She changed the whole game, usually in other cliche, cheesy romantic novels, the guy is the scientific, impassionate, logical character. Now, it's the girl. Natasha was simple and smart(I love geeky characters). She's a strong black female character and I love how easy going she is amidst her being sceptical about some things.
Then there's Charlie, ugh. Let me not spoil this one for you, I want you to go read all about Charlie by yourself.
Top 3 favorite quotes from the book:
I couldn't decide on just one because so many things were just relatable to the real world.
So here are my favorite three quotes from the book
;
- “We have beautiful brains, we invent things that fly. FLY. We write poetry… why settle? Why choose the practical thing and mundane thing? We were born to dream and make things we dream about.”
- “Why not more poems about the sun, the sun is also a star and it's the most important one.”
- “I don't believe in love”
“its not a religion” he says, “it exists whether you believe it or not.”
- “Broke with money but rich with words.”
My opinions about the book:
Now this is my best part to write about.
I do not like romantic novels/books. For me they are too cliche, too cheesy and unrealistic. But this one was really different, I loved the character twist it had and it was so easy going that I had no idea I was getting close to the end of the book. This book is definitely something to read during a journey or trip to another country.
The different race attraction was also a plus to this book. Love knows no boundaries or skin color. Even though they had “ancient” parents, their love still thrived without the issue of race coming in between.
This book made me appreciate the concept of attraction among human beings. Where you notice simple unseen things like his shoulders or her legs. To me, that detailing of tiny attributes really complimented the book. I didn't really like the ending because I was expecting a miracle for her but i guess, things don't always go as planned.
It's short simple and the perfect valentine read!
